Saint Mary Magdalene of Pazzi, born Catherine de' Ricci, was a Carmelite nun renowned for her mystical experiences and profound union with God. Her life of prayer, penance, and devotion to Christ continues to inspire seekers of deeper spiritual understanding and closeness to God.
Early Life and Vocation
Catherine de' Ricci was born on April 2, 1566, into a noble family in Florence, Italy. From a young age, she exhibited a deep piety and desire for God. At the age of nine, she made a private vow of chastity, dedicating herself entirely to Christ.
Entrance into Carmel
In 1582, Catherine entered the Carmelite monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Florence, where she took the name Mary Magdalene of Pazzi. Within the cloister, she embraced a life of prayer, penance, and contemplation, seeking to draw closer to God through the Carmelite way of life.
Mystical Experiences
Saint Mary Magdalene of Pazzi was blessed with profound mystical experiences, including visions, ecstasies, and revelations. She experienced intimate union with God, often entering into ecstatic states of prayer where she communed deeply with the divine.
Passionate Love for Christ
Throughout her life, Saint Mary Magdalene of Pazzi demonstrated an intense love for Jesus Christ, particularly in the Eucharist. She spent hours in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, longing to be united with her beloved Lord and Savior.
Spiritual Director and Reformer
As she grew in holiness, Saint Mary Magdalene of Pazzi served as a spiritual guide and mentor to her fellow sisters in the Carmelite community. She offered wise counsel, encouragement, and support in their spiritual journeys, inspiring them to greater fervor in their love for God.
Death and Canonization
Saint Mary Magdalene of Pazzi died on May 25, 1607, after a life of holiness and service to God. She was canonized as a saint by Pope Clement IX in 1669. Her feast day is celebrated on May 25th, commemorating the anniversary of her death.
