Let us pray:
Grant, we beseech You, O Lord God, that we, Your servants, who now honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Sorrows, may be made partakers of the sorrows of her Immaculate Heart, and in the trials and sufferings of this life, may we be consoled by her maternal intercession, through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.
The traditional Seven Sorrows of Mary are often associated with the following events in Mary's life:
- The Prophecy of Simeon(Luke 2:25-35) - "And a sword will pierce your own soul too."
- The Flight into Egypt(Matthew 2:13-15) - Mary and Joseph flee with Jesus to Egypt to escape the wrath of King Herod.
- The Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple(Luke 2:41-50) - After a journey to Jerusalem, Mary and Joseph find Jesus teaching in the Temple.
- Mary Meets Jesus on the Way to Calvary(Luke 23:27-31) - Mary witnesses her Son carrying the cross to His crucifixion.
- The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus(John 19:25-30) - Mary stands at the foot of the Cross as Jesus dies.
- The Body of Jesus is Taken Down from the Cross(Luke 23:50-54; John 19:31-37) - Mary receives the lifeless body of Jesus in her arms, known as the PietΓ .
- The Burial of Jesus(Luke 23:50-56; Mark 15:40-47) - Mary watches as her Son is laid in the tomb.
This traditional litany is a powerful prayer for consolation and spiritual strength, especially for those who are experiencing sorrow and hardship. It focuses on the deep compassion of Mary, who not only witnessed but also shared in the suffering of Christ. It is often prayed in times of personal trial or during devotion to the Seven Sorrows of Mary.
