Early Life and Call to Holiness
Wivina was born in 1103 in Oisy, France, into a world where young women of noble or well-connected families were expected to marry advantageously. From a young age, she felt a deep attraction to the life of prayer and God’s service, choosing a path that diverged from societal expectations.
Despite receiving many offers of marriage, Wivina steadfastly refused them all, demonstrating both spiritual maturity and courage. Her choice to live a life entirely dedicated to God highlights the virtue of holy detachment from worldly desires, showing that true fulfillment comes from union with Christ rather than from worldly accolades or comforts.
Life as a Hermitess
At the age of 23, Wivina withdrew from society to live as a hermit at Groot-Bijgaarden, near Brussels, Belgium. In this quiet solitude, she devoted herself to prayer, contemplation, and ascetic discipline, seeking a deeper communion with God. Her life of humility and devotion quickly drew attention; people were inspired by her holiness and sought her spiritual guidance.
Though her initial goal was a private life of prayer, God’s providence led her to become a spiritual mentor. The number of disciples who came to live under her guidance grew, demonstrating that holiness, even in solitude, naturally radiates outward to inspire others.
Founding the Monastery at Groot-Bijgaarden
Recognizing the need for a structured community to nurture and guide those who wished to follow God more closely, Wivina accepted land donated by Count Godfrey of Brabant. On this site, she founded a Benedictine monastery, serving as its first abbess.
Under her leadership, the monastery became a center of prayer, learning, and spiritual formation. Wivina emphasized the Benedictine values of ora et labora—prayer and work, creating a community that balanced contemplation with practical service.
