Saint Jude (Thaddeus): St. Peter’s Basilica

 

Life and Martyrdom

  • c. 5 AD – 30 AD: Jude, also called Thaddeus, was an Apostle (Luke 6:16), possibly the author of the Epistle of Jude.
  • 30–c. 65 AD: He preached in Judea, Syria, and Persia, often with Simon. Around 65 AD, tradition says he was martyred in Persiaβ€”clubbed or axedβ€”possibly in Beirut or Edessa.

Burial and Tomb Development

  • c. 65 AD: Buried in Persia or Syria.
  • 4th–9th Centuries: Relics moved to Rome, likely with Simon’s, to St. Peter’s Basilica (or initially to another church).
  • Present: Housed in a shared tomb under the Altar of St. Joseph in St. Peter’s Basilica, alongside Simon.

Timeline

  • c. 5 AD: Born in Galilee.
  • c. 30 AD: Becomes an Apostle.
  • 30–65 AD: Preaches in the Middle East.
  • c. 65 AD: Martyred and buried in Persia.
  • 4th–9th Centuries: Relics relocated to Rome.
  • Present: Enshrined in St. Peter’s Basilica.

Current Status

Jude’s relics share a tomb with Simon’s in St. Peter’s Basilica, a lesser-known but sacred site.
