π️ "Neither Do I Condemn You — The God Who Gives a New Beginning"
π Reflection
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
If you have ever felt crushed under the weight of your own sin — or unfairly judged by others — today's liturgy is a balm poured directly on that wound.
The story of Susanna in the First Reading is a story of a righteous woman falsely accused. Two corrupt elders conspire to destroy her reputation and her life rather than admit their own sin. She cries out to God, and God sends the young Daniel to expose the lie and vindicate the innocent. It is a story of God as the defender of those crushed by the unjust.
Then the Gospel brings us one of the most beloved scenes in all of Scripture — the woman caught in adultery. The scribes and Pharisees drag her before Jesus with cold calculation: they are not truly concerned about her sin. They want to trap Jesus. If He says "stone her," He contradicts His message of mercy. If He says "release her," He breaks the Law of Moses.
Instead, Jesus bends down and writes in the dust. We do not know what He wrote. Perhaps He was writing the sins of her accusers. Perhaps He was simply teaching them, in silence, that judgment belongs to God alone. Then He stands and says those immortal words: "Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her." One by one, they leave.
And then Jesus is alone with the woman. And He asks, gently: "Has no one condemned you?" She answers: "No one, sir." And He says: "Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on, do not sin any more."
Notice He does not ignore the sin — He acknowledges it with those final words. But He leads with mercy. He leads with dignity. He leads with a new beginning. This is always how God works. He does not crush the bruised reed.
As we approach the Passion of Christ, remember: the One who is about to be condemned for your sins and mine is the same One who refused to condemn a guilty woman. He took your condemnation upon Himself. That is the heart of the Gospel.
π‘ One Simple Message for Today God always leads with mercy before correction. Whatever you have done — hear His voice today: "Neither do I condemn you. Go, and sin no more."
π A Prayer for Today
Lord Jesus, You stooped in the dust so that a broken woman could stand. Stoop into my life too. I have sinned. I have hurt others and myself. But I believe in Your mercy. Write Your name upon my heart, not my sins. Say to me today: "Neither do I condemn you." Amen.
πΏ Lenten Practice for Today
Spend a moment thinking of someone who has hurt you. Ask Jesus for the grace to say to that person — even in the silence of your own heart — "I do not condemn you." Let mercy begin with you today, before it is asked of you.
May the Lord bless you and keep you close to His Sacred Heart this holy season. π️
