πŸ•Š️ "The Tax Collector's Prayer: The Most Powerful Words You Can Say"

πŸ“œ Reflection

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Two men go up to the Temple to pray. One stands proudly, lists his spiritual achievements, and thanks God he is not like others. The other stands at a distance, cannot even lift his eyes, and beats his breast: "O God, be merciful to me, a sinner."

Jesus does not leave us in suspense about which man went home justified.

This parable could sting us — because most of us have a little of the Pharisee in us. We compare ourselves to others. We take a quiet satisfaction in our Lenten practices. We measure our holiness. And all the while, God is waiting for the simplest thing: honesty.

Hosea today gives us the key: "It is love that I desire, not sacrifice, and knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings." God is not counting our prayers like coins on a scale. He is looking at the heart. A humble, broken heart, as Psalm 51 says, is the only offering He will never refuse.

The tax collector's prayer — "Be merciful to me, a sinner" — is in fact the prayer of the whole Church at every Mass. It is the Confiteor. It is the Kyrie. It is the foundation of all true prayer.

When we arrive before God with nothing but our poverty and our need, we are standing exactly where He can fill us.

This is the paradox of the Gospel: the one who is empty is the one who gets filled. The one who is poor is the one who receives the Kingdom.

πŸ’‘ One Simple Message for Today "O God, be merciful to me, a sinner" — prayed with a sincere heart, this is the holiest prayer you can offer.

πŸ™ A Prayer for Today

Merciful Lord, I come before You today not with my accomplishments but with my need. Have mercy on me. I trust in Your love, not in my own worthiness. Make my heart humble and my prayer true. Amen.

🌿 Lenten Practice for Today

Begin your prayer today with the tax collector's words alone — nothing else for the first minute. Just: "O God, be merciful to me, a sinner." Let humility open the door to everything else.

May the Lord bless you and keep you close to His Sacred Heart this holy season. πŸ•Š️
