Son of Alfonso and Catalina Chumillas-FernΓ‘ndez, pious parents of six children; baptized at the age of two days. Victor’s father died when the boy was quite young, he had to work to help support his family, but he was early drawn to religious life, and was fascinated with the Martyrs of Japan. He began preaching as a young layman, repeating the homilies he heard in church. Entered the Franciscan Friar Minor novitiate on 2 August 1917 in Pastrana, Guadalajara, Spain, and made his first profession in Avila, Spain on 4 August 1918. Ordained in Toledo, Spain in 1925. Taught and served as rector of students in several Franciscan seminaries. Guardian of Consuegra in Madrid, Spain in 1931. Manager, editor, publisher and writer for the Franciscan magazines “Cruzada Seraphic” and “Hogar Antoniano” from 1931 though 1936. Founded the magazine Comet with essays on science, art and religion. Noted preacher and catechist with a ministry to the sick and spiritual director of Franciscan tertiaries and Poor Clare nuns. Choir director, organist, poet and composer. Evicted from his convent three days into Francisco Franco regime, he and his Franciscan brothers were imprisoned, moved from place to place, and finally martyred in the persecutions of the Spanish Civil War.
