Blessed Maria Pia Mastena (Teresa Maria Mastena)

Feast Day: June 28

Early Life and Devotion to the Holy Face: Born on December 7, 1881, in Bovolone, Italy, Teresa Maria Mastena was the first of five children to Giulio Mastena and Maria Antonia Casarotti. From a young age, she demonstrated a deep devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus, which would shape her spiritual journey profoundly. She received her First Communion in 1891 and made a private vow of chastity soon after, dedicating herself to a life of devotion to God.

Religious Life and Teaching Career: Teresa Maria entered the Sisters of Mercy of Verona in 1901, where she began her religious formation. Despite her initial desire for a contemplative life, she found herself drawn to active ministry and teaching. She obtained teaching qualifications and served in various cities, becoming known for her dedication to education and care for children.

Founding of the Sisters of the Holy Face: In 1932, after leaving a previous religious congregation, Teresa Maria founded the Religious Sisters of the Holy Face. This new congregation aimed to promote devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus and to serve the poor and needy, particularly children. Despite facing opposition and challenges, she persevered, gaining diocesan approval in 1936 and later Pontifical Right in 1947.

Mission and Expansion: Under her leadership as the first Superior-General, the Sisters of the Holy Face expanded their mission across Italy. They established schools, orphanages, and clinics, actively participating in relief efforts during World War II, where they cared for and fed victims without distinction.

Beatification and Legacy: Blessed Maria Pia Mastena's health declined in the early 1950s, culminating in her passing on June 28, 1951. She was buried initially in Campo Verano and later transferred to the San Fior motherhouse. In 2005, her congregation extended to Brazil and Indonesia, continuing her mission of service and devotion.

Beatification Process: The beatification process for Maria Pia Mastena began in 1990 and concluded with her beatification on November 13, 2005, by Pope Benedict XVI. Her beatification was attributed to a miracle, the healing of a newborn, recognized by the Catholic Church, highlighting her intercessory power and spiritual legacy.
