Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.
The Prayer of St. Gertrude the Great for the Souls in Purgatory is a powerful prayer that has been a part of Catholic tradition for centuries. According to tradition, Jesus revealed to St. Gertrude that each time this prayer is recited devoutly, it would greatly ease the suffering of those holy souls in purgatory
St. Gertrude the Great was a 13th-century German nun, writer, and mystic who was graced with many heavenly visions. Jesus showed her a vast number of souls entering heaven from purgatory as a result of her faithful and frequent recitation of this prayer.
While the prayer has not been officially indulgenced by the Holy See, the Church has always encouraged fervent prayer for those suffering in purgatory because our prayers help to alleviate their suffering. The Church dedicates the entire month of November to praying for the Holy Souls, with their particular feast day being November 2nd, All Souls Day.
The St. Gertrude Prayer for the Souls in Purgatory is typically recited ten times to release 10,000 souls from purgatory. This is based on the promise Jesus made to St. Gertrude that He would release 1,000 souls from purgatory each time the prayer is said with love and devotion.
