Paul Liu Hanzuo, born in 1778 in Lezhi, Sichuan Province, is ordained a priest. Poorly and humbly, he administers his Deyang mission. Denounced by a carpenter, to whom Paul had pointed out his slowness to execute a canopy for an oratory, he was arrested while he was celebrating mass. At his request, he was allowed to finish the celebration and then confiscated all the ornaments and objects of worship; In the Praetorium of the Mandarin where the priest is led, he is struck with 40 guns with the leather sole and then strangled on 13 January 1818 in the Square of Execution at the East Gate of Chengdu.
