Feast Day: June 27
Early Life: Arialdus, also known as Arialdo, was born in Cutiacum (Cucciago), near Como, Italy, around the early 11th century. Raised in a devout Christian family, he demonstrated a strong inclination towards religious life from an early age.
Education and Priesthood: Arialdus pursued his education diligently, studying theology and canon law. His dedication and intellectual prowess led him to become a prominent clergyman in Milan, where he was eventually ordained as a deacon.
Reform Movement: In the mid-11th century, the Church faced widespread issues of simony (the selling of church offices) and clerical concubinage (priests living with women as their wives). Arialdus, deeply troubled by these corrupt practices, became an ardent advocate for reform. He joined forces with other reformers, including Saint Peter Damian and Pope Alexander II, to restore the integrity and moral standards of the clergy.
Conflict with the Milanese Clergy: Arialdus' reform efforts met significant resistance from many of the Milanese clergy who were entrenched in their corrupt ways. His passionate preaching and unwavering stance against simony and concubinage earned him both followers and enemies. The Archbishop of Milan, Guido da Velate, was particularly opposed to Arialdus and sought to silence him.
Martyrdom: Arialdus' relentless pursuit of reform eventually led to his martyrdom. In 1066, he was kidnapped by agents of the archbishop and taken to an island on Lake Maggiore. There, he was tortured and ultimately killed for his unwavering commitment to Church reform. His body was discovered a year later, in 1067, and he was venerated as a martyr for his efforts to purify the Church.
Canonization and Legacy: Saint Arialdus was canonized by Pope Alexander II in 1067, shortly after his death. He is remembered for his courage, dedication to reform, and steadfast faith in the face of persecution. His life and martyrdom continue to inspire those who strive for integrity and righteousness within the Church.
Arialdus is especially venerated in Milan and the surrounding regions, where his efforts laid the groundwork for significant ecclesiastical reforms. His feast day is celebrated on June 27, the anniversary of his death, in recognition of his contributions to the Church and his ultimate sacrifice.
